 Flowers Of The Month:

The Daisy

The daisy conveys innocence, loyal love, and purity.

Yet, it is also a flower given between friends to keep a secret; the daisy means “I’ll never tell.”

The other April flower is the sweet pea. While sweet peas signify blissful pleasure, on the other hand they are also used to say good-bye.

CalFlowers News

Our goal is to communicate with our members and interested parties on a monthly basis about recent, past, and upcoming events, program updates, and general information about CalFlowers' engagement in the industry on behalf of the membership.

Memorial Day Flowers 2019

CalFlowers and the Memorial Day Flower Foundation are making final preparations for this year’s tribute, which will take place on Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, at numerous national cemeteries around the country.  There’s still time to donate and volunteer to be a part of this important tradition.

Along with TD Bank, CalFlowers is a Platinum Sponsor of the Arlington National Cemetery tribute.  25,000 visitors will receive roses and California focal flowers that they may place at the grave sites of loved ones and others.  Holland America Flowers is donating 700 bouquets for children in T.A.P.S. (the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.)

CalFlowers is the event organizer at the San Francisco and Golden Gate National Cemeteries.  Mt. Eden is again providing logistical support for these locations. CalFlowers sponsorship will also support the following cemeteries:

  • Ft. Snelling National Cemetery (Minnesota)
  • Ft. Logan National Cemetery (Denver, CO)
  • Houston National Cemetery
  • Sacramento Valley National Cemetery

Many thanks to all of the CalFlowers members who participate in this important event.

New CalFlowers Website Look

After updating the CalFlowers logo with more vivid colors several months ago, we modernized the website as well. The site went live on March 26, and the look and feel is quite a change from the previous website design, but the content remains the same. We hope that you’ll be able to navigate it as easily as with the previous design.

Let us know what you think. Love it? Hate it? More difficult to navigate? Easier to navigate? Send an email to Ginger Tulley at [email protected] if you have any questions about or issues with the site.

CalFlowers Committees Open for Business

A direct outcome of the Board’s strategic planning retreat last October was the formation of a committee structure to guide and oversee the execution of CalFlowers’ updated strategic plan through 2022.  Floral and Associate Floral members are encouraged to get involved with these committees, and make a difference by providing valuable guidance and oversight. The CalFlowers staff is then responsible for executing on the guidance.

Read more about each committee and how you can make a difference by getting involved on one.  You may learn about new aspects of the floral industry that could be valuable to your own businesses.

Renew your 2019/2020 Membership Dues By June 1

In case you missed it, your membership renewal notification was emailed to you on April 1, and payment is due by June 1.

Your member benefits include discounted transportation rates from FedEx, GSO, and OnTrac; your company’s listing in the CalFlowers online member directory; the opportunity to participate in CalFlowers biennial Fun 'N Sun convention; networking opportunities within the floral community; and much more.

The membership renewal email sent on April 1 provides you with a convenient link at the bottom of the email with instructions for paying your dues invoice using your credit card.

If you have not received your dues renewal email or have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at (831) 479-4912 or via email at [email protected]

(Note: To ensure that you receive the dues renewal notification emails from CalFlowers, you can whitelist [email protected] by adding it to your list of Safe Senders.  If you are not sure how to do this, please contact your company's technical support team.)

FedEx Office Update

You will recall that FedEx Office has offered special discounts to CalFlowers members. We have started rolling out the FedEx Office discount program to groups of members rather than to all 700-plus members at once, because it is such a new program and we want to make sure the documentation we send you is helpful.

We will be inviting members to join in the program over the coming weeks. If you have an immediate need to print materials and would like to participate in this opportunity sooner rather than later, please contact Ginger Tulley at 415-561-6116 or [email protected], and she will send you the “Getting Started” materials.

Linda Long Moves On

We wish the best to Linda Long, the CalFlowers staff member many of you spoke with over the years about your membership. Linda has left CalFlowers, and we thank her for service to our members, particularly in these areas:

  • assisted members in staying current with their transportation program benefits;
  • was a steady and trusted hand at member meetings and Fun ’N Sun events;
  • kept the much-coveted Membership Directory up to date and published.

We plan to replace Linda as quickly as possible, and we’ll let you know when the new person is on board.

 A Worthwhile World Floral Expo

Once again, through the generous support of HPP Exhibitions, a number of CalFlowers members were able to participate and exhibit at this year’s World Floral Expo (WFE).

According to Karin Chase (pictured right), Sales Executive at Holland America Flowers, WFE 2019 was a good investment for her company. “This was probably the most successful trade show we’ve been to in terms of meeting new customers who wanted our products immediately,” she said.

Although WFE is smaller than some other national floral events, it seems to have lived up to members’ expectations, with high-quality attendees.

As a reminder, current shipping rates and program information is up on the CalFlowers website.  Members using their log-ins can access this information anytime.  Rates on FedEx, GSO, OnTrac and airlines can all be found as well as other handy information.  For questions or comments on any of our programs, please contact Chris Johnson for assistance (760) 533-5580 or [email protected].

For members who wish to move palletized freight on FedEx, CalFlowers can help direct you to customized solutions and pricing.  FedEx Freight is an excellent option when your shipments call for pallets.  Interested members should contact Chris Johnson at [email protected] for more information.

We would also like to remind members to stay current with their FedEx Express shipping invoices. FedEx’s payment terms are 15 days.  All members shipping on FedEx Express are expected to stay within the FedEx payment terms. GSO is now a part of the GLS Group.  GSO is Proud to be a Part of the GLS Group. We are excited to combine our decades of experience with GLS's expertise as a top-rated European parcel delivery provider. Over the last year, we have become known as GSO | a GLS company, and we are in the process of gradually transitioning our website, supplies, vehicles, communications, uniforms, and facilities to the GLS brand. And for those of you based in the Northwest, we have introduced GLS branded vehicles, facilities, and driver uniforms.  Click Here to learn more about GLS.

For members shipping pallets on GSO, please be advised that there will be a $50 fee for deliveries to RESIDENTIAL areas.  GSO states this fee is due to the fact that these deliveries require special lift gate vehicles.

The CalFlowers GSO program is one of our most value priced offerings.  GSO provides door to door services to CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA NM and ID.  Members who want to ship on GSO must sign up in advance. It’s easy to do and just takes a few minutes.  Please contact Chris Johnson for more details (760) 533-5580 or [email protected].
